Description

1866 Quarter Eagle, AU55
Rare Issue, Ex: Harry Bass

1866 $2 1/2 -- 175-Degree Clockwise Rotated Die -- AU55 PCGS. Ex: Bass. A well-struck example that has only a hint of rub on the devices. The surfaces are surprisingly unabraded, although the obverse rim has a minor depression (as struck) at 6 o'clock. The dies are widely rotated. All Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles between 1863 and 1872 are great rarities. None of these issues has a mintage above 5,300 pieces. Gold coins did not circulate in most of the U.S. during this era due to Gresham's Law, as paper money traded at a discount to coin. Only 3,080 1866 quarter eagles were minted for circulation, only a few dozen of which have survived in any grade. The median grade appears to be AU50. The present coin would probably fall within the lower half of the Condition Census for the variety. Population: 6 in 55, 7 finer (12/25).
Ex: Harry Bass purchased this coin from Rarcoa on August 19, 1968; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 546, Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2002), lot 8007.(Registry values: P2)
