    Description

1840-C $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- ANACS. AU50 Details. Variety 1. Boldly struck, showing a partial wire rim about both sides. This coin was cleaned at one time, resulting in a slightly unnatural, bright green-gold color. A couple of notable dings are seen in the reverse field, but the rest of the surfaces are quite nice for the grade. Scarce in all grades and very rare in AU and better conditions. The mintage for this date was only 12,822 coins, many of which have been destroyed or lost over the years.
