    1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 -- Altered Surface -- NCS. XF Details. Variety 1. The Small Date 1843-C is the rarest of all Charlotte quarter eagles. Only 2,988 pieces were struck, and there are only 75-100 pieces known in all grades, according to Doug Winter. The surfaces of this piece are cloudy yellow-gold and display a greenish cast, revealing fine hairlines from buffing, and portions of Liberty's hair and the eagle's plumage are smooth.
