1844-C Quarter Eagle, MS61
Variety 1, A Condition Rarity
1844-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. The only die pair
for the year. A lustrous honey-gold specimen with distinctive green
and rose overtones, this satiny specimen has a typical strike with
design weakness in the usual locations, especially on the left
(facing) leg on the reverse. The surfaces have few abrasions, and
the overall eye appeal is exceptional. In his 2008 reference on
Charlotte Mint gold, Doug Winter writes: "Due to a number of
reasons, this date is typically found in lower grades than most
other Charlotte quarter eagles." He estimates that only four to six
Mint State examples of the 1844-C survive from a total existing
population of 150 to 175 coins. Population: 3 in 61, 3 finer. CAC:
