    1846-C Two and a Half, XF40
    Appealing Original Patina

    1846-C $2 1/2 XF40 PCGS. Variety 1. This low-mintage Charlotte issue (only 4,808 pieces struck), is seldom seen in any grade. Doug Winter suggests just 100 to 125 examples are extant, with only a small number of those retaining natural coloration. The present coin is an important piece in that regard, with original olive-gold patina overall and deeper coppery-orange hues in the recesses. Slight striking softness on the central reverse is of little concern at this grade level. Population: 10 in 40, 45 finer (7/16).
