    Description

One of the Finest Known 1846-D/D Quarter Eagles

1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU 58 PCGS. The "D Near D" variety. Not quite as sharply struck as the last example, but still well detailed for this variety with just a bit of weakness at the centers. Nice light orange-gold color is present on surfaces that show a considerable amount of luster and some prooflike flash in the protected areas. We note a few very light marks on the face of Liberty and some clashmarks at the centers, but the overall quality of the surfaces is outstanding, especially when one considers that nearly every known 1846-D/D quarter eagle is extensively abraded.
Variety 7-J. An earlier die state than the last with even more of the original mintmark punch clearly visible.
This variety has become popular in recent years and it is now recognized by PCGS. It is hard to estimate how many are known, but from our experience we would suggest somewhere in the area of three dozen pieces. We have only seen five or six AU examples and have never seen an 1846-D/D quarter eagle in Mint State.
The finest 1846-D/D quarter eagles that we are aware of are as follows:
    1. This coin, Ex: Chestatee Collection; Heritage 1999 FUN: 7640 (at $7,475); North Georgia Collection. Graded AU 58 by PCGS.
    2. Kansas collection, Ex: Doug Winter/Hancock and Harwell, Georgia collection. Graded AU 55 by PCGS.
    3. Bowers and Merena 11/98: 2081. Graded AU 58 by NGC.
    From the Chestatee Collection. (NGC ID# 25H3, PCGS# 97742)
