    Description

    1853-D Quarter Eagle, MS62
    Among the Five Finest Known

1853-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 16-M. The only known die pair. As the minuscule mintage of 3,178 pieces would suggest, the 1853-D Liberty Head quarter eagle is rare in all grades. The PCGS website estimates under 100 pieces known. NGC and PCGS combined have graded a little over 100 specimens, only 16 of which are Mint State pieces and five that grade MS62, the finest certified.

Orange-gold surfaces display semiprooflike fields that offer mild but pleasing contrast with the motifs when the coin is rotated beneath a light source. The design elements are mostly typically struck, that is, the hair above Liberty's temple is soft, the letters BER are filled, and the lower part of the eagle is weak. However, the star radials, usually absent on this issue, are sharp on this particular example. No marks of consequence are apparent on either side. Census: 3 in 62, 0 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P2)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HW, PCGS# 7768)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
