    1864 Quarter Eagle, AU Details
    Rarely Offered, Low-Mintage Issue

1864 $2 1/2 -- Scratch -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Once specie payments were suspended by the North early in the Civil War, there was little need for gold coinage. That is reflected in the mintage of 2,824 pieces for the 1864 quarter eagle. It is seldom encountered in any grade, and only a handful of examples are finer than this piece. When closely examined, it is apparent that the initial die polish was never completely eliminated by striking this small production run, as die striations are easily seen in the fields on each side. Also present are several scratches in the fields on each side. Nevertheless, this is a rarely offered opportunity to acquire this low-mintage issue.
