Premium Gem Proof 1903 Quarter Eagle
Only One Piece Finer at PCGS

1903 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS Secure. The 1903 proof gold coins were produced in the year following that in which the Mint switched from a highly contrasted format, with deeply mirrored surfaces and (ideally) thickly frosted devices, to the "semibrilliant" or low-contrast format. The 1903 proof quarter eagles saw a reported mintage of 197 pieces, but most of the survivors grade in the range of PR62-PR64. This deep reddish-gold PR66 PCGS example is one of only four at this level, with a single PR67 piece finer (2/12). The strike is sharp throughout both sides, and contact and contrast are minimal. A moderate orange-peel effect appears in the fields.(Registry values: P1)
