    1905 Two and a Half, PR66
Glittering Mirrors, Rare in This Grade

1905 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. CAC. Brilliant proofs were in vogue at the Mint in 1905, with few proofs struck with substantial contrast between the fields and devices. There are no Deep Cameo quarter eagle proofs for the date, and in many cases, even the few Cameo examples are borderline qualifiers for that finish.

Mirrorlike radiance gleams from bright, glassy fields of this Premium Gem example, and although some of the central motifs have a moderate helping of mint frost, Liberty's cheek and neck lack any semblance of cameo contrast. Overall, the 1905 date is considered a readily available issue. Often lost in the frequency of high-grade 1905 circulation strikes and lesser-graded proofs is the stark scarcity of Premium Gem and finer proof 1905 quarter eagles. We have offered just one PR66 coin and three PR67 pieces since 1995. Together, NGC and PCGS report a mere eight finer specimens than the present CAC-endorsed PR66 example. Census: 14 in 66 (1 in 66 ), 5 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 4 finer (1/19).(Registry values: P1)
