1909-S Lincoln Cent, MS67 Red
Ex: Jack Lee

1909-S 1C MS67 Red PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee. In the past three decades, with the advent of grading services and especially grading service population reports, many hidden rarities are now being recognized. The 1909-S Lincoln is a perfect example. In full Red preservation, PCGS has certified 515 as MS64, 500 as MS65, 203 as MS66, and just 10 pieces as MS67. The same service has graded many more 1909-S VDB cents: 1,030 as MS64, 941 as MS65, 262 as MS66, and 15 pieces as MS67. The comparison tells us that the 1909-S cent is much more elusive with full mint red color than is the 1909-S V.D.B.

While the mintage of 1,825,000 was nearly four times greater, the most devoted specialist in the popular series of Lincoln cents knows that even its widely known counterpart with designer's initials on the reverse is not as elusive as the 1909-S Lincoln in Superb Red condition. Bright reddish-golden hues dominate the surfaces of this incredible first-year San Francisco Lincoln, each side glows with rich, frosted mint luster. Close examination yields a few well-scattered, microscopic carbon flecks and a short paper-thin blemish above the Y in LIBERTY, the only appreciable difference between the coin now and when it left the dies. The strike is incredibly bold, even for this normally well struck issue. Population: 10 in 67 (1 in 67+) Red, 0 finer (2/19).
