Description

Fiery-Red 1909-S VDB Cent, MS65

1909-S VDB 1C MS65 Red PCGS. CAC. The S-VDB is secure in the pantheon of 20th century rarities, in spite of its seeming availability in major auctions. After seeing a number of these pieces one tends to notice they usually have a yellow cast or a woodgrain texture. This piece is unlike most examples of this low-mintage issue we have seen. The color is a rich, flaming red. No yellow and no woodgrain. It appears more like the P-mint cents from the 1920s than an S-VDB. The strike is full throughout, and the surfaces are definitely upper-end, thus explaining the CAC sticker.(Registry values: N1793)
