Description
1909-S VDB Cent, MS67 Red
Perfectly Preserved Surfaces
1909-S VDB 1C MS67 Red PCGS Secure. The 1909-S VDB was
produced to the extent of only 484,000 coins, an amount about
one-fourth that of the 1909-S cents that followed. Garrett and Guth
rank the 1909-S VDB as number 14 in their listing of the Top 100
U.S. Coins. Garrett and Guth make the obvious point for the
1909-S VDB is a coin in huge demand:"The 1909-S V.D.B. cent has long been considered one of the key dates in the series, filling the dreams of collectors young and old. While the mintage of 484,000 may seem high compared to many other American rarities, one must understand that there are millions of people who collect Lincoln Head Cents. There are simply not enough 1909-S VDB Cents to satisfy all of the collector demand, making this coin a perennial favorite and earning it a place on our list of America's 100 Greatest Coins. Of the Top 100 coins listed thus far, this is the first that is generally available today on a widespread basis."
The 1909-S VDB cent has several attractions, among them its status as the rarest of the four first-year business strike Lincoln cents and its position (along with the 1909 VDB) as a first-year type and a one-year subtype. A complete year set of 1909-dated cents, however, would also include the two Indian Head issues, the 1909 and 1909-S. Some collectors enjoy assembling sets of the six 1909-dated cent issues, a set that can be assembled (given sufficient funds) in nearly any grade desired. This is one the most amazing S-VDB cents we have ever had the pleasure of offering. It is essentially "as struck." The mint luster is bright, even red with no trace of mellowing. The strike is strong throughout and we see no traces of carbon or objectionable contact marks. None are finer at either service. Population: 11 in 67 Red, 0 finer (1/14).(Registry values: N7079)
