Description
1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, MS66+ Red
FS-1102, Doubled Die Obverse
Glittering CAC Condition Rarity
1909 VDB 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-1102, MS66+ Red PCGS.
CAC. Ex: Whispering Pines. Cherrypickers' notes, "the
doubling on this variety is evident as extra thickness on all
obverse letters and numbers, but it is most noticeable on the
date." That reference also lists a die chip in the loop of the R in
LIBERTY as a diagnostic. In reality, there are stages of die chips
within the letters of LIBERTY depending on die state, and the chip
in the R appears in Die Stage D; this example of the variety is in
Die Stage C, without the chip in the R, but with the die chips in
the B and a clash at Lincoln's throat. The peach-red surfaces are
lustrous and virtually void of contact. The reverse has a few
minuscule flecks.Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2017), lot 3246; Lincoln Cents from The Stephenville Collection Showcase (Heritage, 11/2023), lot 92005.
