Description

1914-D Cent, MS66 Red
A Premier Key to the Series
None Numerically Finer, Ex: Bender

1914-D 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Ex: Whispering Pines. The 1914-D is one of the premier keys to the Lincoln cent series, boasting one of the lowest mintages in the set with less than 1.2 million coins struck. In fact, this early Denver Mint issue is considerably more challenging in high grade than the more famous 1909-S VDB. Most Mint State survivors show up in MS63 and MS64 in the Brown and Red and Brown categories. Fully Red coins are much scarcer. Only a 14 are graded MS66 Red at PCGS and NGC combined, which is a number that we believe includes at least a couple duplications. No numerically finer pieces are reported.

This strongly struck Red Premium Gem features bold detail on Lincoln's hair and beard. The legends on both sides and the reverse wheat stalks are similarly razor-sharp. Satiny luster glows from finely textured copper-orange surfaces, and only a few microscopic carbon spots are noted. Perhaps the chief thing that sets the Whispering Pines coin apart from other high-end Red pieces is its undeniably original luster. The surfaces, while indeed copper-orange, have slightly muted vibrancy when compared with Red coins from, say, the 1930s. This is characteristic of the natural Red color of the 1914-D, and a major attribute of the current coin.

In A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents, Q. David Bowers writes:

"Mint State coins are rare, and gems with original color, and with no flecks or spots, are very rare. Nearly all have carbon spots of varying sizes, unless they have been dipped or cyanided. A gem with good eye appeal and sharp strike will be a prize when found."

The Whispering Pines coin, formerly of the Bender Family Collection, is without a doubt a top-tier example of this challenging date. Population: 9 in 66 (1 in 66+) Red, 0 finer (11/24).
