1914-S Lincoln Cent, MS66 Red
Tied Atop the Condition Census
An Underrated Rarity in High Grade

1914-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Ex: Whispering Pines. When it comes to top-tier Registry coins for the 1914-S Lincoln cent, there are strikingly few options. The Whispering Pines piece is the only example in MS66 Red that has appeared at auction since 2008, being offered first in a 2021 Stack's Bowers sale, and then appearing here, in the Whispering Pines Registry Set. Another example of the date in this top grade is the former Jack Lee coin, which last appeared in our December 2008 Houston Signature, where it realized $83,375. (An ICG coin in the same grade has also made a couple of appearances at auction over the last 20 years, but collectors have deemed it not of the same caliber as the Jack Lee and Whispering Pines pieces).

The rarity of top-grade 1914-S cents at auction is a direct reflection of the scant survivorship in this grade. Only three MS66 Red pieces are reported, all at PCGS. Moreover, in MS65 Red, NGC and PCGS combined list only a few dozen coins. Put simply, the 1914-S is a grade condition rarity in Gem or better Red grades, and the current MS66 Red piece is tied atop the Condition Census.

This is a beautifully preserved Premium Gem Red coin with rich copper-orange hues across mostly unabraded surfaces. A couple tiny ticks on and above the N in CENTS serve as pedigree markers, as do a few faint flecks on each side, none of which are out of line for the grade considering the that most 1914-S cents are spotted or toned. Localized strike softness on the O in ONE and along the left reverse border is also typical of this San Francisco issue, and the Lincoln portrait is decidedly well struck. Overall, in terms of 1914-S cents we have seen in the Red category, the Whispering Pines coin is undeniably exceptional, and fully deserving of its stature within the all-time finest Lincoln Wheat cent Registry Set. Population: 3 in 66 Red, 0 finer (11/24).
