Description

1917 Lincoln Cent, MS68 Red
Tied With One Other for Finest Known

1917 1C MS68 Red PCGS. Ex: Whispering Pines. Although a plentiful date in lower grades, the 1917 Lincoln enters rare air at the Superb Gem Red grade level. PCGS and NGC combined report only 26 examples in MS67 or MS67+ Red, and these rarely appear at auction. It has been a couple years since one last appeared in our auctions. But more importantly is the rarity of this issue one grade higher, in MS68 Red -- just two coins in this grade are known, both at PCGS. One we have offered on three occasions between 2004 and 2012, the other is offered here, appearing in its second documented auction appearance.

This incredible piece showcases glistening, untouched mint luster rich with original copper-gold, orange, and rose hues. The strike is bold, and overall eye appeal is simply outstanding. A few faint pepper specks on the lower reverse serve as subtle pedigree markers. Population: 2 in 68 Red, 0 finer (11/24).
