Description

1917-S Lincoln Cent, MS65 Red
Ex: Mike Sadler Collection

1917-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Bender Collection. This piece is a rarity among the San Francisco issue for the year in that it was struck from relatively fresh dies on both the obverse and reverse. It was the usual practice during 1917 and 1918 to work three shifts around the clock to produce coins during World War I. As a result, the dies were often extensively worn before being replaced with new ones. This was even more true at the Denver and San Francisco production facilities because all of the dies were prepared at the Philadelphia mint and had to be sent to the other two, making them less readily available "out west." In addition to the sharply struck detail, this coin is refreshingly lustrous with an eye-appealing, orange-red color over each side. A small number of ticks appears with only one or two that keep it out of the next higher grade, which has only happened once at PCGS and not at all at NGC. This higher-grade stat has remained constant since this coin's first appearance at auction in 2004. Minor darkening exists on the last two digits of the date on this example, and spots are infrequently seen. A Lincoln specialist's dream come true for the lucky successful bidder. Population: 26 in 65 (4 in 65+) Red, 1 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 1 finer (1/23).
Ex: Mike Sadler Collection (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 4616, where it realized $20,700.
