Description
Fiery 1917-S Lincoln Cent, MS65 Red
1917-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection. This piece is a rarity among the San Francisco issue for the year in that it was struck from relatively fresh dies on both the obverse and reverse. It was the usual practice during 1917 and 1918 to work three shifts around the clock to produce coins at our nation's mints during the critical wartime period of World War I. As a result the dies were extensively worn before being replaced with new ones. This was even more true at the Denver and San Francisco production facilities because all of the dies were prepared at the Philadelphia mint and had to be sent to the other two, making them less readily available "out west."In addition to the sharply struck detail, this coin is refreshingly lustrous with an eye-appealing golden-red patina that graces its surfaces. Several small ticks appear mostly on the reverse that keep it out of the next higher grade, which has only happened once at PCGS and not at all at NGC. Minor deepening of color shows on the reverse. A Lincoln specialist's dream come true for the lucky successful bidder. Population: 16 in 65 Red, 1 finer (4/10).
