Description

1922-D Lincoln Cent, MS66+ Red
Tied Atop the Condition Census

1922-D 1C MS66+ Red PCGS. CAC. The 1922-D is among the many better-date early Lincoln cents that are much rarer in high Red grades than the key date 1909-S VDB. The finest 1922-D pieces grade MS66+ Red, all at PCGS, and only five are known so fine (12/25). In total, PCGS and NGC report 29 Red Premium Gems, including straight-sixes and 66+ Reds. These make occasional appearances at auction, but most of the coins we have handled have been repeated offerings of the same few coins. The last MS66+ Red piece we handled was the Whispering Pines coin, in our 2025 FUN Signature, which realized $33,600.

The present coin is fresh to our auctions. A bold strike complements bright, satiny copper-gold mint luster, and neither side has notable abrasions. A small fleck inside the O in OF serves as a well-hidden pedigree marker. PCGS Population: 27 in 66 (5 in 66+), 0 finer (11/25). CAC: 12 in 66, 0 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1793)
