Description

1923-S Cent, MS65 Red
CAC, Old Green Holder
A Top-Grade Registry Coin

1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. CAC. There are no 1923-S cents certified finer than the Gem level. Most Red pieces grade only MS63 or MS64, rarely MS65. Since we began recording our Auction Archives in 1993, we have handled such a coin on only two dozen occasions, including duplicate appearances by several examples. PCGS and NGC combined report just 18 Gem Red 1923-S cents, including possible duplication. Just three of those coins carry CAC approval (2/20). This is not only one of those three, it is the only CAC-endorsed Gem Red 1923-S known to have ever appeared at auction. In its prior appearance in our June 2018 Long Beach Signature, it realized $66,000, setting what was then a massive price record for the issue. The only comparable coin to have appeared at auction since was the singular MS65+ Red PCGS example that Legend Auctions handled in September of last year for more than $67,500. This piece, now with the Duckor pedigree, has the capacity to reclaim that record threshold.

The surfaces are remarkably clean with satiny, uniformly copper-red luster. No carbon spotting is apparent, which is in and of itself an exceptional attribute. Even a 10x loupe fails to unearth obtrusive imperfections. The strike is sharp, and eye appeal is outstanding for the issue. A Registry coin of unsurpassed quality. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 16 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red, 0 finer. CAC: 18% of a total 17 submissions for this issue/grade passed. 3 in 65, 0 finer (2/20).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2018), lot 3807.
