Gem Red 1923-S Lincoln Cent
An Elusive 'Top-Pop' Coin at PCGS

1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. The 1923-S is a well-known semikey within the Lincoln cent series, although in Gem Red condition it might well be called a key coin instead. The issue is one of a small handful of S-mint Lincolns that have certified populations at PCGS that simply end, finis, kaput, in MS65 Red, as there are none finer.
For easy reference we list here some of the lowest-population issues in MS65 Red (as of the February 2012 Population Report), and the number of submissions (including possible duplications) of each. Each one of the issues that follows has no examples certified at PCGS higher than MS65 Red. This includes the 1916-S (22), 1918-S (15), 1920-S (9), 1921-S (17), 1923-S (16), 1924-S (8), 1925-S (11), 1927-S (16), and the granddaddy of them all, the 1926-S (1).
The present Gem Red 1923-S shows even, orange-red coloration prevailing over each side, with minimal evidence of contact or carbon. The strike is much sharper than usually seen, bold throughout the obverse and with minor weakness on AM of AMERICA on the lower reverse. This piece ranks among the finest we have ever offered, both technically and aesthetically.
