Description

1923-S Cent, MS65 Red
Exceptional for the Issue, Ex: Hansen

1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Hansen-Whispering Pines. Across the entire Lincoln cent series, few dates are as elusive in high-grade Red condition as the 1923-S. This despite the 1923-S being saved in quantities at the time of issue in roll form. Few Red pieces survive, and many of those slabbed as Red have been dipped to brighten them, much to the detriment of eye appeal. Weak strikes and worn dies are rampant, rendering the 1923-S not only rare in high grade, but almost categorically unsightly as well.

The Whispering Pines coin is quite literally as good as it gets for the 1923-S. This coin takes an issue famous for weak strikes and gives it bold definition throughout the border legends, leaving only slight softness on the finer details of Lincoln's portrait and the individual grains in the wheat ears. Where many 1923-S cents have unnaturally bright color, this piece displays uniform, satiny copper-pink and orange hues. And where many examples of the date are spotted, this piece, is ... not. We suggest the collector not find a superior example of this challenging date. Population: 20 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N2998)
