Description

1924-D Cent, MS65 Red
Among the Finest Known
Ex: Mershon

1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection. This semikey Lincoln cent issue is scarce in all grades, and much in great demand from Lincoln collectors. Full Red Gems such as the present specimen are rare. According to Lange's The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, "Even lower quality uncirculated 24-D's are very few and far between and these usually have defects of one sort or another. The strike is generally weak to moderate--but seldom really sharp; the color is generally splotchy and/or deeply toned to a reddish brown--with accompanying spots. Fully brilliant and spot-free examples are very scarce."

This example boasts no such distractions, with bright orange-red surfaces front and back, no observable carbon, and a sharp strike that shows slight weakness only on the 4 in the date. Like many examples of this issue, the reverse is rotated about 20 degrees from the obverse. To Lincoln cent collectors, the Mershon pedigree is a definite plus. Population: 45 in 65 (6 in 65+) Red, 1 finer (2/19).
