Description

1926-S Lincoln Cent, MS64+ Red
Second-Finest Certified of This Series Rarity

1926-S 1C MS64+ Red PCGS. CAC. Given the "unusual certified population distribution" of the 1926-S Lincoln cent issue at PCGS, this MS64+ Red piece is guaranteed to make series specialists take serious notice. Specifically, the 1926-S is legendary as the only Lincoln cent issue with a single Gem Red example certified at PCGS. That puts this piece in the position of being the second-finest Red example graded at that service, and will enable some forthright bidder to secure this piece and get a leg up on the Registry Set competition without attempting to snag the only finer piece. That memorable Gem Red coin, formerly in the Joshua and Ally Walsh and Jack Lee collections, is a piece that last sold in one of our auctions for more than $100,000, although two years previously we sold it at auction for $149,500 (Heritage, 12/2008, lot 189; Heritage, 1/2006, lot 3097).
The current PCGS Set Composition for the Lincoln Cents With Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes gives nine points for any 1926-S, with a five-point bump for Red. The Plus grade provides another half-point. This MS64+ Red piece displays bright, satiny surfaces with orange-gold centers and pronounced reddish tints around the margins. The piece is quite sharply struck for the issue and virtually carbon-free. Population: 1 in 64+ Red, 1 finer (4/11).(Registry values: N2998)
