Description
1926-S Lincoln Cent, MS64+ Red
Key to the Series at the Next Grade Level
1926-S 1C MS64+ Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Whispering Pines. Casual
collectors of the Lincoln cent series might be astonished to learn
that if this coin were one grade point finer, it would likely sell
for a price well into the six-figure range. PCGS has certified only
four examples of the 1926-S in MS65 Red. One of them, in an early
appearance, traded in our 2006 FUN Signature, lot 3097, for
$149,500. More recently, Gem Red pieces have sold in our auctions
in 2019 and 2020 for $90,000 and $102,000, respectively. We can say
confidently that this near-Gem Red piece will cost less, although
it is nearly of comparable quality. The surfaces are moderate
pinkish-orange with a decent strike and no spots, but the obverse
shows a few small hits that disqualify this piece from the Gem
grade. Population: 78 in 64 (3 in 64+) Red, 4 finer. CAC: 7 in 64,
0 finer (11/24).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 4314.(Registry values: N2998)
