Description
Elusive Fully Red MS64 1926-S Cent
1926-S 1C MS64 Red PCGS. This low-mintage cent (4,550,000 pieces) is a key date in the Lincoln cent series. It is especially difficult to locate examples in full Red. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have graded fewer than 100 Red examples in all grades. A scant two of these grade MS65, and none finer!David Bowers, in his A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents, says of the 1926-S: "This is the rarity among pristine (undipped) Mint State Lincolns. Recently, Sam Lukes, a Lincoln cent specialist for many years, stated (in a July 23, 2007 letter to Bowers) that he has never seen a 1926-S that he would call MS-65 Red."
Copper-gold luster is splashed with orange on the reverse of this Red near-Gem specimen, and an attentive strike leaves strong delineation on the design elements. A few minute marks and tiny flecks deny Gem status. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 67 in 64, 1 finer (11/08). (Registry values: N2998)
