AU Details 1944-D Steel Cent
World War II Off-Metal Rarity

1944-D Cent -- Struck on a Zinc-Plated Steel Planchet, Damaged -- NCS. AU Details. Weight 2.8 gm. Just as a handful of 1943-dated cents were struck on bronze planchets when they should have been made in steel, so too did the change back to a copper-based alloy create a suite of off-metal errors. This 1944-dated steel cent error was struck at Denver; branch mint 1944-dated steel cents are far rarer than their Philadelphia counterparts. It is lightly rubbed, and at one time was subjected to a number of unfortunate "test cuts" in the edge, which appear at the lower obverse and upper reverse. These cuts notwithstanding, this is an attractive and important 20th century error rarity that should appeal to a wide range of collectors.
