Description

Full Red 1944-D/S Cent, MS65

1944-D/S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. FS-512, formerly FS-021; the PCGS insert inexplicably calls this an FS-502, but that is a repunched mintmark variety and not an overmintmark. Previously known as the Type Two overmintmark. The original S mintmark is evident inside the D and left of the upright. Although more plentiful than the Type One overmintmark (FS-511) that is listed in the Guide Book, this variety is still extremely important, and especially rare and desirable in brilliant Gem Red condition. It is boldly struck with brilliant sunset-orange color and frosty mint luster. A few minor carbon flecks are evident in the left obverse field. Otherwise, the surfaces are essentially flawless. PCGS has only certified 15 full Red examples of the variety, including seven MS64 Red, six MS65 Red, and two MS66 Red (6/09).(Registry values: P2)
