Description

1955 Doubled Die Obverse, MS64 Red
One of the Most Prominent Error Coins

1955 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS64 Red PCGS. Olive-brown surfaces evenly coat lustrous surfaces on this lovely Lincoln. Abrasions are minimal, as suggested by the near-Gem grade. Strike is strong, with excellent hair detail for the time period and strongly defined wheat ears. The 1955 Double Die Obverse is one of the most well-known and important errors found on U.S. coins. About 40,000 were originally minted, 24,000 of which had already been mixed in with non-error cents at the time the error was discovered by Philadelphia Mint employees. These were released while the 16,000 non-mixed cents were destroyed, as the Mint did not expect the error to catch on. However, considering the prominence of the error, word spread quickly among the numismatic community and soon entered into American coin collecting legend.
