Description
1909-S VDB Cent, MS66+ Red
Series Key, Exceptional CAC Example
1909-S 1C VDB MS66+ Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Blay-Duckor. The
Lincoln cent is, for many numismatists, the series that started
them coin collecting. Decades ago, when the wheat cents of 1909 to
1958 circulated in abundance, collecting the lowly cent from
circulation proved to be an exciting, challenging, and rewarding
hobby. However, the ease with which most issues could be located
also heightened awareness of the rarely seen key dates. Chief among
those keys was...and remains...the 1909-S VDB. For years, fervent
searches in circulation to locate a rare S-VDB were often met with
despair, when another roll failed to yield such a coin, but
occasionally with delight, when a young "penny" collector flipped
over a 1909-S Lincoln to see those coveted initials at the bottom
of the reverse: VDB.Wheat cents still circulate in abundance, but not in public commerce -- they circulate among coin collectors. Moreover, the 1909-S VDB remains the biggest prize of the series. Collectors assembling sets of high-grade coins discover that, due to hoarding at the time of issue, the 1909-S VDB is among the more plentiful Lincolns in high grade. But the appeal of this coin is not tied to its rarity, it is tied to its storied past as the coin that bred a generation of collectors.
The Duckor coin is one of exceptional quality. Sharp devices and rich golden-orange luster reveal no carbon spotting, and the preservation is nearly flawless. The number of Plus-graded Red Premium Gems with CAC approval known is but a tiny fraction of the population in this grade. Although a few higher-grade pieces are known, almost none are CAC approved. The Duckor coin lacks nothing in eye appeal or technical merit. Population: 27 in 66+ Red, 15 finer. CAC: 11% of a total 262 submissions for this issue/grade passed. 30 in 66, 1 finer (2/20).
