    1928-S Cent, MS66 Red
    Top of the Condition Census
CAC'd, Not Seen This Fine in Years

1928-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. Full Red 1928-S cents are elusive in just about any grade. Although PCGS records numerous grading events for such coins in MS64 and MS65, the infrequency of auction appearances suggests those numbers are inflated by resubmissions. In any event, though, the present coin is unaffected by the MS64 and MS65 populations. It is one of only five coins reported in MS66 Red, all at PCGS. Moreover, it is one of only two pieces in this grade with CAC endorsement. Now while many of the Duckor cents claim similarly small Condition Census populations, the 1928-S offered here is on its own level in this grade. It is the first 1928-S cent in this grade to appear at auction since 2012. The rarity of this piece and its few known comparables is so great that not one of the top five current finest PCGS Basic Set Registry collections contains one. Even the D.L. Hansen Registry Set settles for an MS65+ Red example, which has until the present moment been the finest that this issue has been available for years. The Duckor coin, once again, impresses us with its incomparable technical and visual quality. It is a coin that has the capacity to crack the price record for the 1928-S, which we set back in 2006 at $36,800.

Lustrous, notably carbon-free surfaces yield outstanding golden-orange and light rose hues across vibrant, satiny mint luster. The strike is sharp, and the moderately early state of the dies imparts an element of crispness to the definition that is missing from many Choice and Gem coins. A stunning piece, a highlight of the Duckor Collection. Population: 5 in 66 Red, 0 finer. CAC: 50% of a total 4 submissions for this issue/grade passed. 2 in 66, 0 finer (2/20).
