Description

Engraved 1830 Counterfeit Bust Half Dollar, Very Rare

Engraved 1830 Counterfeit Bust Half. The host coin of this unusual piece is a contemporary counterfeit Bust half dollar, Davignon-3C (scarce). The reverse has been planed and expertly engraved to read Geo. H. Hemingway / Greenwich Lodge / No. 5 I.O.O.F / Paulsboro / Gloucester, Co. N.J. The organization referenced on this example is the Independent Order of Oddfellows, a fraternal organization with British ties. Based on cursory genealogical research, it is likely that Mr. Hemingway immigrated to New Jersey from England and this personalized pocket-piece was engraved in the mid-1800s. Rarely--if ever--is an engraved counterfeit bust half dollar offered for sale.
