Description

Skillfully Engraved 1801 Conder Token

Hand-Engraved Conder Token. Although both the obverse and reverse of this piece have been planed and completely re-engraved, the edge lettering (PAYABLE AT HORTON AND COMPANY) identifies this piece as an 1801 Conder token, D&H-Staffordshire (Stafford)-3, 4, or 5--all being listed as scarce. One side features an intricately carved British man-of-war sailing to the left. The opposite side reads LET REASON ALLWAYS (sic) GUIDE MY WAYS WITH PLEASURE SHALL I END MY DAYS, with two overlapping hearts pierced by three arrows and a wreath/star on each side. A magnificent example that would be the focal point of most love token collections.
