Description

Penang. British Administration Half Dollar 1788, KM7, Pridmore 1, AU, star between date, medal die axis. Pridmore's example was 90 degrees. There is a light gray patina to this piece with only a bit of wear, really a pleasant AU with a few, very small die cracks as made. The obverse is similar to the 1/10th dollar in this sale. The reverse inscription is a barbarous attempt to render the Island name in Arabic script according to its phonetic sound in English. All the coins of Penang are curious in that in no case has a value stated. Pridmore's example was particularly pleasing and it sold for £2,800 in 1982.
