Description
1889 Above All Things Hold Dear Silver Medal
1889 Above All Things Hold Dear Silver Medal MS63. Douglas-1A. Silver. 60mm. An important medal for the Centennial of Washington's Inauguration in 1889, issued by the New Jersey Historical Society, designed by Tardier, and struck at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia under the direction of Mint Director Oliver Bosbyshell. It is interesting to note that the medal is signed TIFFANY & CO. underneath the truncation of the neck. This is a pretty gunmetal-gray specimen with some iridescent toning on the reverse and is edge numbered 18. The silver strikes were presented to the Historical Society committee members and the single gold medal was presented to President Benjamin Harrison. This is one of the rarer medals in the 1889 Inauguration Centennial series, cataloged by Susan Douglas as well as being a seldom-offered Tiffany & Co. issue.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 661025)
