Description
Beautiful Harriman Memorial Medal in Gold
Edward H. Harriman Memorial Medal. Gold. 70 mm. 238 grams. Produced by Tiffany and struck in 20 karat gold. It appears that this medal was designed by James Earl Fraser, and the workmanship is truly extraordinary. We are uncertain when this particular medal was awarded (we spent far too much time already on Google trying to find out). The medals were awarded by The American Museum of Safety. The awards were established in 1913 by Mary W. Harriman in memory of her husband, Edward H. Harriman, a pioneer in American railroading. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are presented annually to railroads in three groups of line-haul carriers and a fourth group of switching and terminal companies for attaining the best employee safety records during the preceding year. The gold medal is the highest award. This medal was awarded to The Pennsylvania Railroad-Central Division. Struck with a matte finish, there is just the slightest rub on the lapels of the jacket and on the lower flap of the workman's vest. An exceptional gold medal.(#661920)Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 661920)
