Description

1916-D Mercury Dime, AU58
Important and Conditionally Scarce Key Date

1916-D 10C AU58 PCGS. Even silver obverses deepen slightly in the left obverse field. Both sides are replete with creamy luster. Strike is strong, with only slight weakness on the high points of the cap noted. As all connoisseurs of American numismatics know, the 1916-D dime is one of the most recognizable key dates in the entire series of American coinage, and has the lowest mintage in the Mercury dime series at just 264,000 coins. The first of these were not minted until December 29 and thus did not enter circulation until early 1917. Given that the first Philadelphia Mint examples were released on October 28, and the San Francisco Mint had also released their first coins earlier than Denver, the release of the new design was already "old news" by the time the first Denver coins made the rounds. Therefore, few were saved, an effect exacerbated by the fact that mintmark collecting was still not popular at a time when the publication of Augustus Heaton's seminal treatise on mintmarks was less than 25 years in the rear view mirror. As a result, this issue in high grade is quite scarce. Population: 69 in 58, 69 finer (9/25).(Registry values: N2998)
