1916-D Mercury Dime, MS62
Sought-After First-Year Key
1916-D 10C MS62 NGC. Well-detailed design elements show a
touch of softness on the middle bands of the fasces. Satiny mint
luster shines through delicate shades of pale gold and pink toning
and only minor signs of contact are evident. The Mercury dime made
its debut in 1916 and the Denver Mint struck a small initial
mintage of just 264,000 pieces, making the 1916-D the most
sought-after issue of the series. Many examples of the first year
of issue were saved by the general public for their novelty value,
but they were mostly the Philadelphia and San Francisco coins, as
the Denver issue's later release exempted it from saving. As a
result, the 1916-D is a rare issue in high grade. Among the 100
