    Description

    1916-D Mercury Dime, MS63
    Satiny Full Bands Example

1916-D 10C MS63 Full Bands PCGS. This Select Full Bands 1916-D Mercury dime is proof that mild die wear is not directly responsible for the weak strikes of branch mint silver coins during the late 1910s and the 1920s. This coin is fully defined throughout the centers and peripheries, and yet there are metal flowlines in the fields and margins that attest to a worn die state. A few light handling marks are unobtrusive, and light golden toning appears on each side. The 1916-D in Full Bands is an elusive and key date, although nice collector-grade examples such as this piece are occasionally available for a price. The 1916-D owes its low mintage to a late-1916 order from the Treasury for several million quarter dollars; dime production at Denver was halted until the quarter dollar order was filled, stunting the 1916-D Mercury dime mintage to 264,000 pieces.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23GY, PCGS# 4907)
