Description
1916-D Mercury Dime, MS63
Pleasing, Lustrous Surfaces
1916-D 10C MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1916-D Mercury dime is the
undisputed key to the series with its remarkably low production of
264,000 coins. The 1921-P and 1921-D issues rank "distant second"
with mintages of slightly more than 1 million pieces each. The
1916-D was generally a well-struck issue, but it has an unusual
grade distribution. Many examples are found in the range from Fair
or Almost Good to Very Good (Poor examples generally show
insufficient mintmark to distinguish from a 1916-P), with an
occasional Fine coin found. Specimens in the range of Very Fine to
AU (and more specifically, XF40 to AU53) are seldom seen, and nice
examples with good eye appeal in that grade range are highly
prized. In Uncirculated grades the 1916-D is especially sought
after. This Select example has light golden-reddish patina with
strong underlying mint luster. There are few marks on either side,
none obvious, and the center band details are almost completely
defined.Ex: Fred Yee Collection / Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2012), lot 3887.(Registry values: N2998)
