Description

1916-D Mercury Dime, MS64
Impressively Sharp Centers

1916-D 10C MS64 NGC. This is a sharp near-Gem example of the key 1916-D Mercury dime, which nearly earns a Full Bands designation. There is some minor strike doubling on the peripheral legends and the mintmark, and a thin vertical die crack extends from the rim up through the tip of the branch stem into the fasces. Satiny luster is toned light golden, with occasional russet freckles visible near the borders. No disruptive abrasions are present. The Denver Mint only struck 264,000 Mercury dimes in 1916, marking by far the lowest mintage in the series. The 1916-D is the only Mercury dime issue that will be a "stopper" for collectors even in low circulated grades. Census: 10 in 64 (2 in 64+), 8 finer (2/19).(Registry values: N2998)
