1916-D Mercury Dime, MS65
Brilliant Full Bands Example
Truncated Mintage

1916-D 10C MS65 Full Bands PCGS. The satiny, near-brilliant luster of this Gem Full Bands example is traditional for the first-year key date. Here, it glistens in the fields and shows only a few marks on Liberty's cheek, and a hint of light champagne color graces the margins. Well-struck interiors are one of the coin's chief hallmarks, while the rims are 80% broad and squared.

Relatively few 1916-D Mercury dimes are certified in MS65 Full Bands, and finer pieces are legitimately rare. Illustratively, over the last five years, we have seen only four individual Full Bands pieces finer than the present. While several dates in the Mercury dime series are condition keys in high Full Bands grades -- pre-1920 Denver issues and both 1921 issues come to mind immediately -- the 1916-D is the most famous of the keys, and the quality of a collector's acquisition for this issue is a telltale indicator of their collection's quality overall.

The 1916-D draws its key-date status from a mintage of only 264,000 pieces, struck in November 1916. Coinage of Adolph Weinman's new design at the Denver Mint was suspended on the 24th of that month, and production resources were shifted to quarter dollar production. Since the Standing Liberty quarter by Hermon MacNeil was still in design limbo in November, it was Barber quarters that were produced, to the extent of more than 6.5 million pieces.

The short run of Mercury dime coinage at Denver in November went unreleased until 1917. By then, the novelty of the design had waned, and most first-year-of-issue hoarders had done their deed with the already-released Philadelphia coinage. The 1916-D Mercury dime largely went ignored in circulation for some time, leading to a supply of circulated and low-end coins known today. High-end Mint State pieces, such as the present offering, are the scarcest survivors of the famous debut of Weinman's Winged Liberty Head and fasces design. Population: 38 in 65 (3 in 65+) Full Bands, 34 finer (9/24).
