Condition Census 1920-D Mercury Dime--A Lustrous and Attractively Toned MS67 Full Bands PCGS Example

1920-D 10C MS67 Full Bands PCGS. The Denver Mint experienced considerable difficulty with its Dime dies in 1920. Early cracks suggest improperly hardened steel, and the basining process may also have been poorly handled by the personnel in Denver. Worse yet, striking quality seems to have suffered even for most die pairs that were properly executed. In addition to the all-important central reverse crossbands, many '20-D Dimes lack sharp definition on the final digit in the date. The Condition Census Superb Gem that we are offering in this lot, however, is fully brought up in all areas with the central crossbands being well rounded as well as fully split. The luster is simply extraordinary, fulsome mint frost swirling around both sides in the absence of distracting bagmarks. As for the eye appeal, it is no less impressive than the technical merits, due, in no small part, to the presence of mottled golden-orange and crimson-russet peripheral toning. Our desire to provide collectors with a useful way to identify this coin in future auctions is the only reason why we mention a small, nearly vertical graze below and behind Liberty's eye. Combined NGC and PCGS Population: four in 67 Full Bands, with no coins finer (1/03).
