Description

Gem 1924-S Mercury Dime
Rare Example With Full Bands

1924-S 10C MS65 Full Bands PCGS. In the mid-1920s, the San Francisco Mint followed a policy that sought to minimize expenses, sometimes resulting in poor quality control in its coinage operations. Dies were used long after they began to deteriorate, and they were widely spaced in the presses, to lessen stress and breakage, but often resulting in soft striking details.
The present coin is a happy exception to this rule, with sharply detailed design elements in most areas, and full definition on the bands of the fasces. Some signs of die deterioration can be seen in the attenuated E in ONE. The surfaces are attractive and lustrous, under light champagne-gold patina. Population: 15 in 65 Full Bands, 2 finer (3/12).
