Superb Gem 1926-D Mercury Dime
Full Bands Definition, Marvelous Toning
Only Four Coins Certified in MS67 Full Bands

1926-D 10C MS67 Full Bands PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1926-D Mercury dime boasts a small mintage of 6.8 million pieces, and few surviving examples can match the appeal of this Superb Gem specimen. While this date can be located in lower Mint State grades without too much difficulty, examples above the Gem level are very scarce. Coins in Superb Gem condition, exhibiting Full Bands definition, are extremely rare. A search of auction records revealed only four appearances of a 1926-D in MS67 Full Bands in the last 16 years. Heritage was privileged to handle an example on three occasions, one in the Central States Signature Auction (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 2283, realized $48,875; another in the Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 1011, and a final example in the ANA Bullet Sale (Heritage, 7/1993), lot 161. The fourth appearance was in a Stack's sale in 2006. NGC has graded only one coin in MS67 Full Bands, with none finer, While PCGS has certified two specimens in the Superb Gem Full Bands grade, with none finer (8/10).
The present coin is a magnificent, Superb Gem, with light scarlet and green patina over virtually pristine surfaces. The central design elements are strongly impressed and frosty, and the all-important central bands are fully defined and separate. As almost always seen on this issue, there is a touch of weakness on the peripheral legends on the reverse. David Lange (2005) writes of the 1926-D dime that: "Finding one with both full bands and a fully struck legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA will be challenging." The high technical grade of this piece complements the outstanding eye appeal, creating a special prize for the discerning collector.(Registry values: N4719)
