Description
Legendary 1942/1 Mercury Dime, Captivating MS 65 Full Bands Quality
1942/1 10C MS 65 Full Bands PCGS. From September 1941 through the end of the year, the engraving department at the Philadelphia Mint was engaged in making both 1941-dated and 1942-dated dies for dime production. During these confused times of rushed production schedules, at least two obverse dies received their initial impression from a 1941 hub and their second impression from a 1942 hub. One of these dies, with the more pronounced overdate feature, was used in Philadelphia to coin an undetermined number of 1942/1 dimes. Since this variety was widely recognized by 1943, numerous examples were withdrawn from circulation and are now available for a price in all grades up to and including Choice About Uncirculated.Mint State 1942/1 Mercury dimes are, however, in a class of their own. The few extant representatives most likely found their way into rolls of otherwise regular 1942 dimes. Since an indifferently produced Mint State '42/1 is a legitimately rare find, it is probably redundant for us to say that a MS 65 Full Bands representative represents an opportunity of a lifetime for the advanced specialist. With essentially mark-free surfaces and boldly defined fasces, the Bassano specimen is a sight to behold. Flickers of steel-lilac iridescence are noted as the coin rotates beneath the light. The frosty-white luster does, however, dominate this coin's outward appearance and the cartwheel sheen is free of disruptions. Population: 9 in 65, with a mere 2 finer (5/00).
