1942/1 Mercury Dime, MS65 Full Bands
Popular Overdate Variety

1942/1 10C FS-101 MS65 Full Bands PCGS. CAC. Ex: Holman Collection-Jay Eisenberg. Overdate varieties are identified for the Philadelphia and Denver Mint Mercury dimes of 1942. The few 20th century overdates are the result of hub impressions with two different dates. At the time of die making, the first hub impression was dated 1941, and the second was dated 1942, creating this iconic overdate variety. This variety is more correctly described as 1942/41 as the 4 in the date is clearly doubled. Discovery of the 1942/1 Mercury dime dates to March 1943.

Responding to an inquiry, the Mint's Chief Engraver at the time, John R. Sinnock, explained that the Mint began preparing dies for the new year in September 1941 and that about 1,000 new dies had to be ready for production at the beginning of 1942. Soon thereafter, Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross observed: "During that period when utmost vigilance was required to keep the dies segregated by respective years, a die may have been given one blow with a 1941 hub and then, by some accident, finished with a 1942 hub."

Today, these overdates are relatively common in circulated grades with more than 3,600 PCGS certified submissions through AU58. In Mint State grades, this variety and the similar 1942/1-D dime emerge as important rarities with PCGS populations of 173 coins and 152 examples, respectively.

As expected, the strike is exquisite for an example designated as Full Bands. The Winged Liberty on the obverse has sharp hair and wing details while all the horizontal and vertical bands on the reverse are completely delineated. The leaves are sharp as well. Only the lower diagonal band is a trifle weak. Both sides of this Gem are highly lustrous with delicate champagne toning on the obverse and light peach-gold toning on the reverse. Population: 11 in 65 Full Bands, 11 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 2 finer (11/24).
