Description

Uncommon Superb Gem 1942 Dime, MS68 Full Bands PCGS

1942 10C MS68 Full Bands PCGS. With a staggering original mintage of 205.4 million pieces, the 1942 is obviously a common date in an absolute sense. Few coins, however, have survived with surfaces as smooth as those of this lovely Superb Gem. A thin veil of silver-gray patina blankets the frosty surfaces, but every feature displays a bright, radiant appearance. There are a pair of shiny, prooflike spots near the obverse border, one directly below the L, and the other directly beneath the Y, in LIBERTY, which are the result of die polishing, and partially conceal some slender die striations (as struck). A few small patches of charcoal and russet-colored patina are seen near the rim on each side. This is an uncommonly well impressed coin for the issue with crossbands that are rounded and distinctly split. NGC and PCGS combined report only three examples in MS68 Full Bands, and none are finer (4/03).
