1916-D Dime, Lustrous AU58 Full Bands
    Excellent Collector Coin

1916-D 10C AU58 Full Bands PCGS. CAC. The 1916-D Mercury dime shares several traits with the 1909-S VDB cent. Both are popular first-year key coins, usually not collected as type issues except perhaps by well-heeled collectors. Both are low-mintage issues, with the cent under a half-million pieces made and the dime slightly more than a quarter-million. Both also share the dubious reputation as likely the most-counterfeited U.S. coins, a status that is testament to their widespread popularity as well as their liquidity as easily sold collectibles. For these reasons, authentication of both issues is well-advised.
One dissimilarity between the two issues is that all 1909-S VDB cents have the same mintmark style, although there are four different mintmark locations known. On the four 1916-D dime reverses documented, both the mintmark style and positions can vary slightly. This is a lovely, high-end AU coin, also known as a "slider" that would fit comfortably in appearance in most Uncirculated sets. Most of the luster remains, it is just thinner in the fields and over the high points. Each side has a tinge of reddish patina and there are a few grade-consistent marks present.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 23GY, PCGS# 4907)
